– Hello, Barry. How would you describe this set of images?
– Out of the seven photos selected the first four are literally the backends of town, what I Iike to call the ‘incidental spaces’. They are places which are easilly walked by, driven past or avoided. I present them as compositional puzzles: texture and colour and shape, abstracted from their context, become intriguing photographic images. The last images are what I call ‘sacred’ or ‘elegiac’ spaces, where I am using the light much more to suggest a presence or evoke a sense of mystery and awe.
– As a photographer, what do you find interesting about urban environments and architecture?
What usually attracts your visual attention?
– My initial interest was very much in derelict and abandoned spaces. It was here, in these places awaiting demolition or radical renovation, that I believed the best trinkets were often to be found. However, I have gradually weaned myself off of this obsession and sought photographic trinkets in the everyday: loading bays, multi-story car parks, alleyways, office facades, underpasses, pissed in corners, etc. I am always looking for the fascinating in the mundane.
– Which other photographic styles do you like besides architectural and urban photography?
– I am open to most anything from portraiture to landscape. However I am always looking for images which intrigue or unsettle me.
– What motivates you to be busy with photography, what is your goal as a photographer?
– For me photography has developed out of having struggled to keep up a studio-based art practice. When it became clear that I didn’t have the time to keep using a studio for painting and printing I adapted to making ‘art’ on the hoof. I am much happier now going out with a camera and discovering places. My intention is to keep improving’, I am constantly learning from other photographers. I am also keen to build up a consistent range of images which can be exhibited as print or on-line.
– Do you have a ‘dream location’, where would you like to take photos?
– Gunkanjima Island and the Trans-Siberain train line from Moscow to Vladivostok.
– What is your favorite camera?
– My current Canon EOS 7D
– Did you publish any photo books and where do you expose your works on internet?
– I am relatively new to photography and have had a few pieces exhibited in the following on-line magazines and blogs: Urban photo blog, Native publications, Smells like human absence and Photo fringe. I also exhibited in the Brighton Biennale 2010.
